Red Lion Art Gallery and Studio, a studio in downtown Grand Junction, will be hosting the New Year Networking event for those looking for movie making tips and the opportunity to discuss film.

Put on by the Western Slope Cinema Society (WSCS) on Feb. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m., the free event brings together Western Slope community and local filmmakers in a celebration of film projects as a networking opportunity.

“Within the last few months, with the work I’ve done in film I approached [Red Lion] with the idea of doing some kind of event that showcases films,” Running Director Productions founder Christopher Michael said.

The networking event also serves as a soft open for Cryptic Cinema, which officially opens Feb. 28 at Red Lion, devoted to the discussion of film, art history and other topics.

“The film industry is a new venture for us, but we know it is growing locally,” Co-Owner of Red Lion Jonathan Gosser said. “Through networking and collaborations with Christopher Michael, we are learning new and valuable information. We look forward to working with other producers and directors in the valley. The growth of the industry locally is exciting.”

There will be three speakers at the event, including Jordan DeLeon, a local photographer, who will talk about music videos, including the production of the recent “5pm @ CMU” with artist Elias Acevedo.

Preston Manee, a local filmmaker, will speak about the process of making a movie, including what those new to directing need to know.

Michael Byrne, an actor from Chicago, will also be talking about what it’s larger transferring to a larger city from a smaller town.

“I feel the people I’ve met on the Western Slope, though everyone has a project they could be working on, there are opportunities all over,” Michael said.

“. . . This event is meant to bring the WSCS members together. An event to discuss new projects, socialize with those of a similar passion, and above all else grow the Western Slope film community,” Gosser said.

The event will take place at the Red Lion Art Gallery and Studio, located at 546 Main Street at The Mercantile Building.
