Calling all gamers

The video game community on CMU campus

Colorado Mesa University has one club that wants to create a gaming community. The E-Sports club is looking for gamers to participate in events and join their team.

For those that don’t know exactly what E-Sports is, it is essentially playing team-oriented games competitively. Games like this include League of Legends, Dota and even Rocket League. All of these games fall under the umbrella of E-Sports, then the individual teams that play the different games are the different variants of E-Sports.

For comparison, a football team would be like a League of Legends team underneath the umbrella of sports. Therefore, all that one really needs to play an E-Sport is a game and a team to play with.

Headed by Robert Long or BJ, the president of the E-sports club and captain of their League of Legends team, the group is currently looking for more members and fellow gamers to participate in the club.

“I am looking for people, club-wise, to get to a place where we can play games,” BJ said. “Whether that be Rocket League, Counterstrike, Smite the list goes on. We are looking for a group unity.”

Currently, the only team the E-Sports has is for League of Legends; however, the more people that want to join, the more availability they can create for different games and various amounts of teams. Before they are allowed to do that though, they need the numbers.

BJ can be contacted through email primarily since they are currently looking for a permanent place to host the club. They typically meet on a “bring your own console” basis and usually end up in some university room somewhere, making the email an important tool for the club. They can be found at BJ ’s personal email: rjlong@mavs.coloradomesa.edu or through the club email: e-sports@coloradomesa.edu.

If you want to play a game through or with the club, send BJ a message and he can integrate you into the club.

The club isn’t just for competitive players though. The club is more than open to host players that are casual or would like to play a game casually and not necessarily try to become the best player there ever was.

“If you play games that are E-Sports like Rocket League, or team sports you are more than welcome to come,” BJ said. “When we started we just played games as a club. That is what I want more of on campus: more of an availability for the gamer community. For those that identify as gamers and for them to have a place to play and a community that is warm and welcoming.”

The club is open to anyone that want to play games, competitively or casually. The goal of the club is to foster that community rather than catering towards a specific demographic. Offering a place for anyone to play these games and to become better gamers and to have a great time. So if you are a gamer and are looking for a place to play with other gamers, try the E-Sports club because they are both looking for members and creating a community here at Colorado Mesa University.
