Colorado Mesa University men’s basketball head coach Andy Shantz formally resigned from his position on Friday. The resignation will become official June 30.

Shantz began his CMU career as a student and then became an assistant coach in 1997. He served as an assistant coach for the basketball program for 16 years before taking over the helm in 2013.

Under the reign of Shantz as head coach, the Mavericks made it to the RMAC Tournament three times and managed to win the RMAC Championship in 2015. That year, CMU went 21-9 and managed to have star player, Ryan Stephan, be named the RMAC Player of the Year and the CCA National Player of the Year.

In the last two seasons, The Mavericks missed out on the RMAC Tournament and accumulated a total record of 19-37. This past season, CMU only played with one senior on the entire team and it was considered a rebuilding season.

CMU ended the 2017-2018 season with an 11-17 record and finished 12th in the RMAC.

Shantz was 72-70 in his time as the head coach of the Mavericks.

Shantz graduated from CMU back when it was Mesa State College and played two seasons for Mavericks. He currently ranks eighth in school history in three-pointers made.

Shantz told the school that he is very thankful for his time at Mesa and is very appreciative of the players he has coached throughout the year.
