One of the newest additions to the college, the Bus Bergman Sports Complex will officially open on the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) campus on Thursday, May 5, with the ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m.

The complex will include the baseball stadium, the softball field, the track and field facility, and the practice football field.

Named after CMU alumni Walter “Bus” Bergman, the field officially opens ahead of the final games of the Maverick’s regular baseball season versus the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves around 6:05 p.m. CMU is 32-12 on the season, coming off a 3-game skid against Colorado Christian University.

Bergman, who was inducted into CMU’s Hall of Honor in 1996 and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, coached both baseball and football at CMU from 1950-1980, leading the football team to three junior college conference championships and a 102-63-9 record. His baseball teams had similar success, winning 20 conference championships with 3 second-place finishes at the JUCO World Series and a 378-201 record.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony Bergman will throw the first pitch, accompanied by his two sisters. Over 20 members of the Bergman family will be present.

Following the opening of the complex, CMU will continue their series against CSU Pueblo the next day on May 6, with a doubleheader and fireworks show to end the night. Admission will be free in honor of State and National Parks Free Admission Day.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis will be throwing the first pitch for game two of the doubleheader, with Game 1 at 3:30 p.m. and Game 2 scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The fireworks show begins around 9:15.

CMU will play in the RMAC Tournament on May 11 following their final regular-season game on May 7 to finish the ThunderWolves series.
