Friday night, the Colorado Mesa University wrestling team hosted their annual Bank of Colorado Battle in Brownson. This year, it was against the No. 5 ranked CSU-Pueblo (CSUP) Thunderwolves. Despite CMU coming in with a 2-6-1 overall record on the year, the Mavericks were able to keep it a close one against the Thunderwolves. But when it was all said and done, it was CSUP who came out on top 24-18.

After going back and forth throughout the night, the Mavericks and Thunderwolves found themselves tied at 18-18 going into the final match of the night. It was CMU’s Clayton Voytilla vs. the Thunderwolves’ Cody Johnson in the heavyweight matchup. Johnson was able to get a first-round pin on Voytilla to give the victory to CSUP.

The Mavericks won five of the 10 matchups on the night, including three straight to tie the match at 18-18. Bruno Nicoletti defeated Preston Lauterback 7-3 to win the 174-pound group. Adam Visconti won over Aaron Benton 11-5 to win the 184-pound group. And Jareb Aziz won the 194-pound group over Donovan Rincon.

Sophomore transfer Frank Martinez made his home debut for the Mavericks but fell in the first matchup of the night 9-4 to Josiah Seaton in the 125-pound matchup.

CMU has another home match on Saturday against Colorado School of Mines, which will be their final home match of the season. It is set to start at 6 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
