Another sweep and another perfect weekend for the Mavericks. The Colorado Mesa University softball team The second doubleheader saw two 12-0 shutouts, rounding out the total score for the entire weekend to 42-0 after the four-game sweep.
The first game of the day started with a bang and only lasted five innings before the mercy rule kicked in. Abbey Toller and Anne Marie Torres started the day off by getting the first three runs in the first and second inning off of a double by Torres and a single by Toller. Brooke Hodgson would knock the fourth score for the Mavericks in the second with a double, but, the fun wasn’t even getting started.
In the third, the best offense in the country would manage to score eight runs in the single inning alone.
Nearly the entire line up was able to get a turn at the ball in the third with seven RBIs combined from Toller, Kellie Mrofcza, Lexie Comer, Hodgson, Torres, Kaila Jacobi, and Zoe Pakes paired with a single score when Maggie Manwarren took advantage of a fielding error.
“Hitting is our number one thing,” Brooke Hodgson said. “If we hit well we will outscore every other team no matter what.”
McKenzie Surface was throwing the heat the entire game as she recorded 10 strikeouts and only allowed two hits for the second day in a row.
The second game went much the same way as the first. The scoring started with a triple from Alexandria Dufour and was followed by Hodgson’s home run that sent both of the girls around the bases. The second inning saw the bulk of the scoring, with five runs batted in by Mrofcza, Dufour, Jacobi, Toller and Hailey Hinson and one run made by Mrofzca scoring on an error by Fort Lewis.
Alexa Samuels was the sole scorer in the third inning with a single RBI. Then in the fourth, pitcher Surface hit a double, sending Hinson and Bailey Kleespies home, rounding out the final score to 12 points.
Kimbri Herring got five strikeouts in the three innings that she pitched. Hodgson then entered the circle after playing left field and only allowed a single hit for the final two that she filled in. The defense had two errors and was, despite being very low, not normal for the team to do.
“We need to clean up our defense a little bit,” Pakes said. “We had a couple of errors this weekend which is uncharacteristic for us.”
CMU’s winning streak manages to reach 34 and does not show any signs of stopping.
The Mavericks have not allowed any other team to score more than five runs in a single game besides Colorado School of Mines; who they still managed to sweep in four games.
Next week the Mavericks will look to beat Black Hills State on the road. Taking the solid offense that they showed this week and cleaning up a couple of tiny things that were lacking in the team so that they can go and play their best and keep the team at number one.
