Sushi & Rok: too far off the beaten path

For obvious reasons, Grand Junction has not always been the best place for a sushi lover to reside. Options of reasonable quality were limited to No Coast and Suehiro until Sushi & Rok made its debut earlier this year.
The fine dining restaurant, whose trademark is their special “grill on the rock” technique, has replaced the old Pantuso’s Italian Restaurant on Horizon Drive.
Our server, Savannah, was friendly enough. She began her introduction with an explanation of what exactly “rock grill” is. We may not have been listening carefully enough, but all six of us at the table were confused (and a bit disappointed) when no rocks were presented with any of our meals. (Note: if you want the “rok” part of Sushi & Rok, remember to order something that requires actual grilling. We learned this lesson a little too late.)
I figured one can never go wrong with Edamame as an appetizer, so I ordered that along with the baked salmon tempura roll for dinner. Overall, the group I was with got a pretty broad range of entrees from vegan sushi to the dragon roll (spicy tuna and tempura shrimp with eel and avocado).
Although we were all satisfied and the food’s quality was top notch, I would say that it is definitely possible to get sushi that is just as good, if not better, more filling and less expensive somewhere else.
