‘Kick Ass 2’ falls short of its predecessor

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2010 superhero film “Kick Ass” is here and it ups the ante with a delightfully shocking amount of violence, vulgarity and suspense.
Everyone’s favorite self-proclaimed superhero, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is back and paired with his crass sidekick, Hit Girl, Chloë Grace Moretz, both are on a mission to fight crime in New York City.
However, when Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s (“Superbad”) character, Red Mist, decides to get his revenge on Kick Ass through becoming the world’s first super-villain through recasting himself as the Mother Expletive, things go from shocking to horrific and then to straight depressing.
Jim Carrey breaks his typecast as a goofy comedian through taking on the serious role of Colonel Stars and Stripes who acts as a mentor for Kick Ass, Hit Girl and several other superheroes intent on saving the city. However, Carrey flops and is better advised to stick to the genre that he is good at and known for.
Unable or unwilling to compete with the original when it comes to realism and relatability, Kick Ass 2 embraces the ridiculous and spins it into a tale of friendship, love and, of course, kick ass superheroes. Despite the occasional cliché or predictable plot point, the action packed flick is hilarious, tear jerking, mind blowing and overall memorable.
