Mavericks roll in Gunnison, dismantle Mountaineers in 55-0 blowout

The CMU Women’s Rugby team traveled to Gunnison on Saturday morning to take on the Western State Mountaineers. The Mavs dominated the matchup with a 55-0 victory via forfeit, improving their record to 2-0 on the year.

The Mountaineers had to forfeit the match due to a shortage of players. Colorado Mesa did give some players to Western so that both teams could still play each other.

The Mavericks were led by junior captain Mackenzie Lewis, who put in one try on the day. Mesa had nine tries as a team. CMU kicker Allison Needham also made five extra points.

The majority of CMU’s dedication and work this year has come from the motivation of Lewis.

“Mack has invested so much of her time making us as strong as we are,” sophomore Lizzie Avila said. “We practice every day and give 100% all the time.”

Going into the rest of the season, Lewis believes that perfecting fundamental skills and being creative on the field will help to continue their success.

“Right now we’re working on trying new things and we’re just working to perfect them,” Lewis said. “We really played down to Western’s level and played sloppy. The hands play also needs a little improvement as well.”

Lewis and the rest of the CMU squad will play Western again on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Dixon Park.
