Diversity: Black Student Alliance gives students opportunities

CMU’s Black Student Alliance gives students of all races and ethnicities a chance to showcase their talents and feel welcomed by people they can relate to. Because the club is growing, there is more excitement and opportunity for on-campus activities.
“We’re getting more people on a consistent basis and people are more excited to be involved,” BSA President Sylvester Thabit said.
This year BSA has decided to expand its events by holding music concerts, poetry jams and giving out free T-shirts to promote the club. The members involved this year have a variety of talents, the most common being music. These artists come from all different walks of life, ethnicities and have a variety of music to share.
“We‘re promoting diversity throughout our lifestyle,” Thabit said.
BSA concerts welcome all students on campus to share their talents.
“I think we have a pretty broad mix of artists,” Thabit said.
The club has poets, rappers, singers and dancers. BSA creates a larger network for people of all races to be heard. Artists can perform and participate in free BSA concerts on campus. BSA helps promote their members talents, but they also use other avenues such as Twitter, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, and Pandora.
All club members participate in brainstorming for events to bring awareness to BSA. It makes them feel like they’re part of something greater than themselves.
“The comfort level has been extended knowing that people can relate to me, culturally and socially,” BSA member Michael Harris said.
Thabit describes the diversity within BSA as an “incubator for young minds.” Each member is exposed to different ideas and is given a chance to bring all of this diversity together. Though the members in BSA are all different, they share a common ground and come together to create a family.
