Women’s soccer picks up pair of draws against CSU-Pueblo, Ft. Lewis

Last Friday, the Mavericks traveled to CSU- Pueblo, only to end the match in a 2-2 tie against the Thunderwolves.

The Mavericks came out strong and led the Thunderwolves after scoring their first goal 51 minutes into the game. Junior Kaselyn Butters found the back of the net after a blocked shot left an open net on the rebound. Shortly after with only 30 minutes left to play, senior Sara Islas of the Mavericks found the back of the net to put CMU ahead with a 2-0 lead over CSU- Pueblo.

But the Thunderwolves mounted a quick comeback, scoring two goals with only four minutes left in the game and sending the game into overtime. Both teams went scoreless in overtime, ending the game at 2-2.

On Sunday, the Mavericks returned home to Walker Field to take on the nationally ranked Fort Lewis Skyhawks. Previously this season, the Skyhawks defeated the Mavericks with a late goal, 2-1.

The Mavericks came out with a lackadaisical offensive approach, but kept the game scoreless through the first half.

“We hit the post twice, so it’s not like we’re missing the target on frame,” coach Erin Sharpe said. “It’s just a matter of inches.”

When CMU took the field after halftime, the close score led to hostility on the field. Maverick Tayler Franklin was thrown to the ground late in the second half, increasing the intensity from both sides.

“Anytime there’s a malicious foul against one of our players, the other players are motivated by it,” Sharpe said.

At the end of regulation play, the score remained 0-0, sending the Mavericks into the first period of overtime.

The first overtime went scoreless and the Mavericks and Skyhawks headed into the second overtime with the score still at 0-0. Both teams failed to score in the second overtime, ending the game at 0-0. This makes for the second time all year that the Mavericks failed to score a goal.

“It was a combination of both the Skyhawk defense and our offense,” Sharpe said.

The Mavericks travel to Metro State on Oct. 7 and Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 9.
