Mavericks dominate day one

The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) swim and dive team came out on top after day one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) championships.

The RMAC swim and dive championship returns to Grand Junction. Colo Wednesday afternoon as the Mavericks look to win another ring.

The women dominated in the 200-individual medley when junior Lily Borgenheimer came in first and senior Grace Payton came in second.Freshman Elsa Huebsch and senior Kennedy Bright came in fourth and fifth in the same event. 

Senior Noel Scott tied for second place with Megan Gallagher of Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) in the 50-freestyle. 

Junior Robyn Naze and senior Isabel Hansson competed in the 1,000-yard freestyle and came in second and third. 

The women’s team made the finals in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay and won both events.

During the men’s final heats of the day, the Mavericks dominated on the swim and the dive side. The Maverick swept the podium during the three-meter dive. Senior Chandler Lingston finished first in front of redshirt-sophomore Isaiah Cheeks and junior Tanner Belliston. 

In the 1,000 yard freestyle, freshman Gavin Anderson placed first and junior Logan Ellis placed second. Sophomore Matheus Laperreire and junior Mahmoud Elgayar placed first and second in the 200-yard individual medley. 

The team also placed first in the men’s 200-yard medley relay in front of Colorado School of Mines and OBU. 

Day two of the RMAC swim and dive championships begin on Thursday Feb.17 at 9 A.M.
