Looking to finish the regular season strong, the Colorado Mesa University women’s lacrosse team was on the road in Salt Lake City, Utah to face off against Westminster College. Coming off a game where the Mavericks put up 22 goals, the offense was still in high gear as the Mavericks came away with the 20-13 road victory over the Griffins.
The Mavericks and Griffins found themselves tied at 7-7 with 13 minutes to go in the first half before three straight goals by the Mavericks would give them the halftime cushion they were looking for.
It was then in the second half that the Mavericks were able to build up their lead thanks to a five-goal unanswered streak that gave CMU a 7-goal advantage with just over 16 minutes to play in the game. Both teams would add on another 3 goals apiece before the clock hit zero giving CMU their second win in a row.
A turning of the tide that helped lead to a victory was the goalie change made by CMU. After just under 17 minutes of action, Jillian Pfeifer had allowed 7 goals for the Mavericks, so the switch was made to Kierstin Elder who finished the game only allowing 6 goals and collecting 6 saves to secure the win.
Lydia Furrow was the leading goal scorer for the Mavericks as she put in 5 on the day to go along with her 2 assists. Amanda Geary, Jessica Cook and Paige Elliot each added another 3 goals apiece to their stat lines to go with a combined 5 assists.
As a team, the Mavericks put up 32 shots in the game, with 29 being on goal. This was only a few more than the Griffins, who had 29 shots with 24 shots on goal. CMU also finished the game with the higher number of turnovers, 30, than Westminster, 26.
The win gives the Mavericks their 12th of the season to give them a 12-3 record heading into the RMAC tournament. The tournament will begin on May 4.
