Following only their third loss of the season to Regis University, the Colorado Mesa women’s lacrosse team was on the road against University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Saturday. CMU was hoping to not be the first conference win for the Mountain Lions, and they made sure of it by demolishing them 22-2 when the final buzzer sounded.
The Mavericks first goal of the game came a mere three minutes into the contest when Lydia Furrow found the back of the net to give the Mavs the early lead. CMU then rattled off another two goals before UCCS was finally able to get on the board. However, that would be the only score of the half for the Mountain Lions as the Mavericks would go on to score 10 goals in the half alone to take a 10-1 lead.
The second half was even better for the Mavericks as they tallied another 6 goals before UCCS was finally able to get on the board for their second, giving the Mavericks 13 unanswered scores combined from the first half into the second. CMU would add another 6 goals over the final 15 minutes of action to end the game.
Furrow was the leading goal scorer for the Mavericks as she shot in 5 on the day, and was a perfect 5-5 on shot attempts. Lindsi Peters led the Mavericks in assists with 4 while also compiling 2 goals of her own. Jillian Pfeifer was the winning goaltender for the Mavericks after only allowing 1 goal in her 30 minutes of action and coming away with 3 saves. Kierstin Elder was the second goalie in the game for CMU and she too only allowed 1 goal and came away with 1 save.
As a team, the Mavericks totaled 32 shots on the day, with 30 of them being on goal. Meanwhile, their defense shined as they only allowed UCCS to have a total of 8 shots during the entire game, and only 6 of those came on goal. The Maverick defense also forced UCCS into committing 11 turnovers throughout the game.
With the win, the Mavericks moved to 11-3 overall on the season and 6-2 in the conference. This is good for third in the RMAC only behind Regis and Lindenwood, who are both currently undefeated in conference play.
CMU’s final regular season game will come on April 29, at 1 p.m., against Westminster College. Following the game will be the RMAC tournament, which starts on May 4.
