Sand beneath their feet, sun above their heads, CMU Beach Volleyball Mavericks stampede over old records, taking home victories while raising the bar for the future.
During CMU’s spring break, while many students were away from campus, the beach volleyball team traveled to Georgia and Tennessee where they took home ten straight wins. Marking a program record of fourteen consecutive wins. Setting the tone for the rest of the season, this team aims to crush pre-existing records and make history.
On March 6, the sandy Mavs beat Central Wyoming College, securing the first win to the streak. Fast forward to March 17, CMU faced off against Tennessee Tech University and beat them two times in a row.
CMU took home one last win against LaGrange College: their fourteenth win in a row.
The whole team has been making astounding feats, sophomore exercise science major Ellie Ask said that “accomplishing nine wins in a row was amazing. I mean, it’s kind of unheard of.”
These nine wins on the road set the tone for the Mavs for the rest of the season. Despite all the travel and setbacks they faced as a team, they made the most out of every moment.
“Everyone played really well, considering it was a lot of travel. I mean, we were in the vans for a long time. We flew into Atlanta, drove back to Tennessee, drove back to Atlanta,” senior criminal justice student Gracyn Spresser said.
“To compete at that high level while still just being on very little sleep and traveling and sitting and whatnot is a great accomplishment,” Ask added.
While this team was on the road and in the courts during all of spring break, they also left some time for team bonding.
“We stayed in a great lake house,” Spresser said, “and went kayaking.”
Building their relationships as teammates will help them build the support system they need to push forward in the leader board.
Shortly after the last program record, Ask and Spresser accomplished a new goal together.
“We just broke the record for most pair wins in a row,” Spresser said.
With a total of sixteen straight pair wins, this duo is burning hot as they climb the ranks and set new records.
On top of the team’s success and the win streak with her pair, Spresser has her eyes set on higher goals. Securing a total of sixty-nine career wins, Spresser holds the record for most career wins on the team.
With breaking records and shining athletes, CMU beach volleyball continues to blaze a trail of accomplishment and success.
“This sets us up for success in seating for nationals,” Spresser said.
