Colorado Mesa’s golf teams went on the road to tournaments this past week. Both teams finished the multi-day tournaments placing in the top 10. The men’s team put together three solid days to take 8th place while the women’s team finished in 9th.
CMU’s men’s team participated in the Mustang Intercollegiate down in Goodyear, Ariz. The tournament was held at Palm Valley Golf Club, which has a 7,015-yard course and is a par-72. CMU was one of 20 teams to participate in the event, which included 104 total golfers participating in the three-day event.
Senior Garrett Harrison finished highest for the Mavericks among the 104 who participated. Harrison finished with a score of 214, which was two strokes under par. Finishing second lowest on the team was Trevor McKune who finished the course with a score of 215.
As a team the Mavericks best day came on the third and final day of the tournament. After shooting a 288 on the first day and a 297 on the second, the team finished shooting a 284 on the final day. This came in large part to the teams 14 birdies on the day.
The men’s team’s next tournament will be from April 3-4 down in Phoenix, Ariz. Where the team will be participating in the Southwest Kansas Shootout.
The women’s team was also down in Arizona, only their tournament was held in Tucson. They participated in the West Texas A&M Desert Invite at Ventana Canyon Mountain Course. This is a 5,949-yard course with a par of 72. CMU was one of 16 competitors, which totaled 85 golfers. Ten of the 16 teams also came into the tournament ranked in the nation’s top 50.
Sophomore Ashlyn Kirschner was the top finisher for the Mavericks. She shot a score of 165 in the two-day tournament, which put her in the top 50 for the tournament. As a team, CMU’s best day came on day two where the team shot a total score of 324. This came one day after the team shot a 331. The score was good enough for the team to finish 9th in the tournament, which was ahead of RMAC rivals CSU-Pueblo and UCCS.
The women’s team’s tournament is scheduled from April 10-11 down in Goodyear, Ariz. where the team will be participating in the Mustang Intercollegiate.
