Following a tough loss last weekend against the nationally ranked Regis Rangers, Colorado Mesa responded in a huge way by defeating Adams State 20-3.
CMU jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first half before the Grizzlies were finally able to get on the board. The first half onslaught however was not over yet. The Mavericks went on score another 6 goals in the half to make it a 14-2 halftime lead.
The second half was nowhere near as high scoring, but the Mavericks never lost control of the game. CMU scored another 6 goals in the half to the Grizzlies lone 1 to take the 17-point victory.
A total of 10 Mavericks scored during the contest. The Mavericks were led by freshman midfielder Lindsi Peters who scored 5 goals on the day on 6 shots. Peters was joined by sophomore midfielder Olivia Hayden who pitched in another 4 goals on 4 shots.
As a team CMU entered the game ranked second in the RMAC in caused turnovers averaging 13 per game. That number went up after Saturday’s matchup as the Mavericks forced 24 on the day. The defense also only allowed a mere 6 shots to the Grizzlies offense while the Mavericks spouted off 31 in the matchup.
With the win the Mavericks moved to 2-1 on the season. Their next opponent will be the team’s first road game of the season against CSU-Pueblo on Mar. 12. The game is set to start at noon.
