If you’re like me, then long-term planning isn’t your strongest resumé area. This is mostly why I’ve never been to the X-Games in my five years here at Colorado Mesa University. Don’t let this happen to you, for the love of all that may or may not be holy.
It may be too late for me to go to the X-Games, but luckily spring freakin’ break is right around the corner. You only get a handful of these, people. Each one is precious, but that doesn’t mean you have to pull out more student loans just to get to your ideal destination.
It may seem obvious with a name like Grand Junction but many people overlook the amount of stuff to do around this section of Colorado within road trip distance.
Moab, Las Vegas, Los Angeles/San Diego and Lake Havasu are just a few of the one to two day driving trip options if staying in Colorado isn’t in the cards for you.
With loads of national parks here in Colorado and the surrounding area, river trips and camping are always an unforgettable experience and the cheapest option for vacationing students. Food, gas and party supplies are the main expenses for these trips; with a tent your lodging is free!
Camp sites are the best place to turn up with a group of friends. That’s a given, but what if you’re not the outdoorsy type? For that, take I-70 west towards Vegas.
WARNING: Vegas at your own risk! Vegas is expensive! Many road trips destined for the coast or Lake Havasu have been cut short here. Unpredictable drivers and bad dice rolls have left some of the best spring breakers stranded here.
From Las Vegas, go southwest toward either Los Angeles or Lake Havasu. In my experience, you have a better chance of running into fellow CMU Mavericks and some Canadians at Havasu. Trust me, partying with Canadians is the best. Havasu is the destination if you’re looking to get faded on the cheap. I once found a whole bottle of Johnny Walker in the hallway of my hotel, for instance.
If my recollection of Havasu seems spotty that’s because it is.
Of course, the best way to save money is to not go anywhere at all and just use your imaginations. From here you can picture how cool it would be to wake up to a sunrise under an Arch in Utah, or wake up to a sunset on the Vegas strip. From your imagination, you can fly over the ocean and your budgets to descend on Kauai. Whatever you decide, make the most out of your spring break, Mavs!
