The Mavericks fell 6-18 to the defending national champions and fourth-ranked team in the nation, Lindenwood University (LU).
Redshirt sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman led Colorado Mesa University (CMU) in scoring with three goals and she scored one goal on a free-position shot. She collected one of CMU’s 11 draw controls.
Both teams turned the ball over 13 times in the game and both teams also caused seven turnovers in the game. The Lions outshot the Mavericks 34 to 22 and both teams put over 50% of their shots on the net.
LU opened the game with a five-goal run in the initial six minutes of the game. Redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz got the Mavericks on the board with 8:42 left in the first quarter with her first goal of the game on a free-position shot.
The Lions scored two more goals, but Jakeman cut off the run before it could get going on a free-position attempt to bring CMU within five goals. Emma Arnold answered for LU to put them up 8-2 with 2:15 left in the first quarter.
The Lions got the scoring started in the second quarter as Logann Eldredge scored on a free-position shot. Jakeman and redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis scored two consecutive goals for the Mavericks to bring them back within five goals with 9:18 left in the second quarter.
LU scored six goals to end the second quarter and take a 15-4 lead into the halftime break. Meredith Parry’s goal to put the Lions up 14-4 issued the running clock rule which remained through the rest of the game.
The Lions scored the only three goals of the third quarter to 18-4 going into the fourth quarter.
Wentz scored her second goal of the game with 9:45 left in the game on a free-position goal as she charged to the front of the net to finish in the bottom left corner of the net. Jakeman scored the final goal of the game with 26 seconds left in the game off an assist from redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans.
Evans scored two points in the game with both coming off assists and picked up one ground ball in the game.
Wentz scored two goals in the game with both coming off free-position shots and she won two draws in the game. She caused one turnover in the game and picked up one ground ball.
The Maverick’s next game is Friday, April 1 at 5:00 p.m. against Regis University in Denver, Colo.
