This may be considered a blasphemy to those who are diehard Thanksgiving food lovers but quite frankly, I’m not the biggest fan. Maybe it’s because I’ve eaten the same foods for the last 25 years or maybe it’s the historical connotations that sour my appetite. Whatever it is, Thanksgiving day foods just don’t scratch my culinary itch, that is, with the exception of a few.
Greenbean Casserole 8/10
I’m fully aware that this is probably the most quarrelsome dish on the face of the planet, but oh my god, the way that my mom makes it makes me act like a starving, rabid dog. It is the only food that I truly look forward to, other than the deserts. While I’ve heard people’s nasty experiences with this divisive dish in the past, I simply cannot relate. Skill issue, I suppose.
Pumpkin Bread 9/10
I HATE pumpkin pie with a passion. It’s slimy, cold and icky. I fully believe that people who genuinely enjoy eating pumpkin pie are unopposed to eating sludge. That being said, as a certified white, I do love me some pumpkin-flavored things. A pastry that my family frequently makes instead of pumpkin pie is our beloved pumpkin bread. It is warm and fluffy, and overall, just an amazing pallet cleanser to all the other hardy Thanksgiving day foods.
Corn Varieties 10/10
You can’t go wrong with corn. Truly. There are so many different ways to prepare and enjoy it. Personally, I’m a big corn on the cob person with a bit of butter and some seasoning, but I’ll happily eat it however prepared. On that same note, corn bread, when made correctly, is delicious and a perfect Thanksgiving day side dish.
Regardless of how mediocre I find the main cast of traditional Thanksgiving foods, there are a few that I stand with. Hopefully one day my family will entertain my desire to go out and eat Chinese for Thanksgiving, instead of eating the same things year after year.
