Question: What is a good job that is flexible for college
Dear Occupationally Challenged,
Having a job in college is a necessity for many but outside of that, it’s a great way to broaden horizons and make unexpected friends. A classic job option for students is working in retail and food service. Both employers in these sectors tend to be very flexible, have a lot of hours to offer in the evening after classes, and understand that you’re probably not going to be there forever. Never underestimate the power of Indeed or showing up in person with a resume in hand. The Handshake app in MavZone is a great place to start. It’s a job posting service exclusive to CMU and may have something more related to the field you want to study if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s also a good spot to look for on-campus gigs. Those jobs are especially nice because they’re kind of required to work around your schedule. Outside of those suggestions, entering into an application explicitly stating that you’re a student will help employers determine if they can work around your schedule. Another important piece of this is to be transparent about your availability. Give your new boss your school schedule, important dates (like finals week), and let them know if you intend on leaving during breaks. This will help prevent miscommunication and potential frustration. There are loads of entry-level, flexible job opportunities for college students, you just have to know where to start.
