Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields take up a majority of what is offered in higher education.
These majors, minors and certificates help students pursue their STEM goals. Departments that encompass these programs are Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Engineering, Health Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Kinesiology, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Physical and Environmental Sciences. This makes up seven of the 13 total departments.
The wide range of studies in STEM has prompted the making of the Physician Assistant (PA) Program as well as updating equipment on all three Colorado Mesa University (CMU) campuses.
“I’ve always really liked helping people and one of the best ways I thought to help people was to be a doctor,” senior Cellular and Molecular Biology major Kierra Lee said.
Lee was in a physics class at the time of the interview and working with the rest of the class. Her partner, junior Michael Musante expressed interest in being a PA, which is why he decided to major in Cellular and Molecular Biology as well.
Senior Tia Gentry is a member of the Klamath Tribes in Oregon, who helps in funding her STEM education. Gentry has been studying for her Medical College Admission Test and is planning on going to medical school to further her education.
“I love that in science I will always be learning and growing. Through CMU I have been able to work at IRIS as well as be a member in Alpha Sigma Alpha. This has provided me with leadership experience as well as given me a platform to grow and develop into the person I am today,” Gentry said.
STEM students can be found in all different lecture halls as well as labs. There is constant buzz from said students around campus as they continue their projects and study for their latest tests.
Any students interested in these programs can contact the administrative assistant from whichever department they want to participate in.
