Last semester, Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) Student Life was tasked by the administration to put on a unique event for students every single day, for the duration of the semester.
“It was quite a challenge but I feel like the pack team really pulled it together and we made some amazing events,” Programming Activities Committee (PAC) Chair Mattison Kolb said.
“I would say that we had a lot of events, and it got to a point where a lot of students gave feedback that there were too many events,” Associated Student Government President Angel Bautista said. “The more events that there were, a lot of students felt like, ‘well if I don’t go to this event, there’s going to be one tomorrow night.’”
While Student Life successfully pulled off all of those activities last semester, things will slow down in terms of quantity for the Spring 2021 semester, but pick up in quality.
“This semester, we still want to have events but we want to have more substantial events because last semester, there were more mini events,” Bautista said. “The intention is that you stay there for at least an hour or so [this semester].
Student Life is planning to put on a few different items for Valentine’s week, including a “how well do you know your partner?” quiz and speed dating. Other ones to look forward in the future include a March Madness Week and Super Smash Brothers doubles tournament.
While PAC and Student Life are working in tandem to put on different activities on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the highlight event of the spring semester will once again most likely not happen. The Spring Concert, normally held in April or May, will likely again be skipped this year because of COVID-19, although currently everything is still up in the air.
“There wasn’t anything, like, crazy,” Kolb said about holding events for the Fall 2020 semester. “Everyone was super compliant [with COVID protocols] and I think students here really want to have as normal an experience as possible.”
As the semester goes on and the weather warms up, PAC and Student Life will again be able to hold their events and gatherings outside, where restrictions on mask wearing are more lax.
“I’m looking forward to when it starts getting warmer so we can do more things,” Kolb said.
