The Mavericks continued their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) success with a big 1-0 win over MSU Denver on Friday.
The Colorado Mesa University men’s soccer team traveled to Denver to continue their stretch of conference games. With the win, CMU jumps to 2-0-1 in RMAC play and 4-1-1 on the season.
From the start of the match, the Mavericks continued their well-known characteristic of an aggressive offense and attack game. CMU held an offensive position for a vast majority of the first half with exceptional ball control while still maintaining a very effective defense effort.
The Mavericks held the road runners to just two shots on goal in the entire match, both occurring within the first half. CMU took the match into the half with 0-0 still set on the scoreboard but was a step ahead the whole time.
CMU’s many offensive weapons were on display with 18 shots taken by a total of 12 deferent players, led by Ramses Atahualpa who had four.
Throughout the start of the second half, the Mavericks flipped their defense into overdrive. A team with a fire to win.
The only goal of the afternoon came in the 83rd minute on a cross header from Kevin Chavez to Atahualpa who headed the ball into the back of the net. This put the Mavericks up 1-0 over the Roadrunners with just seven minutes left in regulation play.
The Mavericks finished the match with a total of seven shots on goal.
CMU will continue their road trip and travel Colorado Christian University on Sunday, Sep. 29 at 2:30 p.m. in Lakewood.
