In their first RMAC game of the season, women’s volleyball set the tone right with a dominant performance against New Mexico Highlands University. Colorado Mesa University swept the Cowgirls to get off to a quick start in conference play.
Senior Kasie Gilfert led the Mavericks in kills with 15, but Camille Smith was the most efficient Maverick tonight as she had a .733 hit percentage. CMU also had 51 assists and 38 digs in the game to get an emphatic win.
In the first set, the Cowgirls jumped out to an early lead, but it was short-lived as the Mavericks grabbed the lead at 3-2 and kept the lead for most of the set only giving it up once for the remainder of the set. CMU’s largest lead was six points and it came at the end.
The second set was started off by the Mavericks going up 5-3, and both teams battled for the edge, and the Mavericks gained control to win the set 25-20. CMU kept a three-point lead until the 15th point when the opened it up and kept a four to five-point lead the rest of the set. The Mavericks were right where they wanted to be, with all the momentum going into the third set with their opponents on their heels.
CMU dominated the final set of this game took an early lead and didn’t slow down at all, as they dusted the Cowgirls 25-11 to complete the sweep. The set was tied at 6-6, and then the Mavericks went on a 10-3 run to take firm control of the set. CMU didn’t take their foot off the gas pedal either with the big lead, they took it to the Cowgirls in the final points as the Mavericks got a big statement win in their first conference game.
The Mavericks had 52 kills and had a .408 hitting percentage as every player, but one played in all three sets.
Katie Scherr came close to a double-double tonight as she had 10 kills and seven digs in three sets tonight.
