Since the 2018-2019 school year ended, much progress has been made on the new hotel on the west side of campus. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) broke ground on the construction of the hotel on Oct. 3, 2018. It was named Hotel Maverick by the CMU Board of Trustees in Jan. 2019.
During the course of summer 2019, the structure of the hotel, including the four floors, have been erected with most of the framing complete, according to Associate Professor Britt Mathwich of the Department of Business, Hospitality Management.
Mathwich has worked on the research, conceptual planning, feasibility and early budgeting of the hotel and will continue to help integrate Hotel Maverick into academic programs.
In addition to the base structure, the common areas and restaurant and bar areas are nearing completion. The exterior sheeting and drying in the building are currently in progress.
The finished hotel will feature four floors with sixty rooms including 57 double, queen or king rooms, and three suites. The hotel will be able to host 150-175 people.
Hotel Maverick will also offer a small meeting/classroom, fitness room, hot tub, retail area food and beverage and a third floor restaurant, bar and patio with spectacular views.
Students and faculty from Marketing, Communications, Business/Hospitality Management and Art and Design have worked together to develop the name, branding and logos for the new hotel.
Once completed, students will continue to receive real-life observation of a working hotel in operations and general and administration such as accounting, sales and marketing, according to Mathwich. Job and internship opportunities will also be available for hospitality, culinary and other CMU students.
