The Colorado Mesa University women’s lacrosse team defeated Westminster College 20-5 on Saturday to close out the away games for the regular season. The Mavericks were led by senior midfielder Olivia Hayden who had five goals, and sophomore attacker Marissa Leonardi who had five goals and one assist.
The scoring in the game was started by Hayden scoring who dished out two consecutive goals and followed by two more by Danielle Simpson and Paige Elliot to give CMU a 4-0 lead. After the fourth goal, Westminster immediately answered with their first goal, then both teams would exchange goals for the next three minutes. The first 15 minutes of the opening half was controlled by the Mavericks.
The last 15 minutes of the half went the Mavericks way as well, as Leonardi would score with 14:51 left in the half. After Leonardi’s third goal, CMU would score four more in the half going up 12-3. In the first half, CMU controlled 11 draws and picked up 21 groundballs, showing the hustle in which has been their defining trait all season.
The second half was opened by Hayden again as she picked up her fourth goal of the day, but Westminster would answer, but the Griffins would score their last goal of the game with 15:01 left in the game.
In the last part of the second half, the Mavericks Leonardi and Hayden would pick up their last goals of the game, as they continued to play hard to the final whistle. Westminster made a goalie switch with 9:53 left in the game, but the switch wouldn’t stop CMU from scoring, as they picked up their final five goals of the game to finish the dominant performance in their last RMAC conference road game.
The Mavericks had 35 shots on goal, but Westminster’s goalies picked up 15 saves in the game. CMU also picked up 36 groundballs and compiled 20 draw controls.
Junior attacker Paige Elliot was third in scoring with three goals and three assists, followed by sophomore midfielder Danielle Simpson who had three goals and two assists in the game.
