On Saturday, Oct. 27, Colorado Mesa University held its annual Homecoming Parade. This year it seemed quite short but was good overall.

While at the Homecoming Football game, the winners were announced. Third place was Greek Life, second place was Club Rodeo, and first place was The Forensic Science Club.
I am not sure who was doing the judging, but personally, I believe that other groups were far better than who was chosen for first place.
Judging should not only be on the float itself, which is a big portion of the scoring, but also on the energy and performance of each group.

The Cheerleaders and the Marching Band had far more energy than a large portion of those who participated.

Yes, I do agree that Greek Life deserved to be one of the winners. But why were they third place? They should have been first or second, along with the Marching Band. Even the Frisbee Club had more to show than the Forensic Science Club did.
Maybe the judging criteria needs to be updated. Could this be the reason that so many clubs and organizations here at CMU don’t get involved? I understand the reason why the turnout is so low for spectators. Why go for a parade that lasts less than twenty minutes?
I believe that there needs to be more put into the parade, such as starting with knowing the theme much earlier. Maybe giving extra funding so that those groups that don’t have enough funds will be able to participate.
The other problem with Homecoming is that it seems to be more oriented around alumni instead of students. And instead of all the decisions being made by alumni, the students should be able to vote on the theme.
