McCormick, volleyball continue home dominance

The Mesa State volleyball team remained perfect at home this season after going 3-0 this weekend.
The Mavs started with a non-conference sweep of Westminster (Utah) College, 3-0. The Mavs dropped their first set at home against Adams State, but still won 3-1. Fort Lewis was the toughest team for Mesa coming into the weekend, but the Mavs put them away easier than any other opponent, winning the first two sets 25-9 and 25-11. The ladies won the third set and the match 3-0.
“It’s the Maverick way,” Antoinette McCormick said. “We are just playing amazing right now.”
McCormick was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week last week and lived up to that honor during the game against Fort Lewis. She recorded nine kills, an assist and a block.
“It’s a team award,” McCormick said. “I’m just glad that we all played well enough to earn the award.”
After defeating a tougher team in Fort Lewis, the Mavs improved to 6-0 at home and 12-6 overall this season. The team is riding a seven game win streak after a loss to Colorado Christian Sept. 18.
“The fans are great here. If you ask any of the coaches around the RMAC they’ll tell you we have the best fan support in the conference,” coach Dave Fleming said. “It gets better and better. The team loves it and they are getting comfortable playing here. I think that’s why Proxy-Connection: keep-alive

are playing so well at home.”
With five home games left this season, and a good record, the team knows that they can improve more. The Mavs are tied with Western New Mexico for the West division lead with a 6-3 conference record.
“We want to improve our consistency,” Fleming said. “We want to play at the level we did with Fort Lewis all the time. Even if it’s not that high of a level we want to play at least 80% of that level.”
The ladies welcome the top two teams from the East division this weekend when Colorado School of Mines comes to town Thursday followed by Nebraska-Kearney Friday night.
