The Colorado Mesa University computer science, mathematics and statistics department has begun advertising for their annual poster competition. This contest brings attention to their department and is a fun way for students to add content and personality to their university.

The poster must contain content that is computer science, mathematics or statistics related, and will be displayed in Wubben Hall, along with previous years’ winners.

The poster must measure 12×18 in., which is provided by the CSMS department, located in Wubben Hall room 132. The posters are placed above benches and lockers in Wubben, therefore, must be small enough to fit in the designated areas.

Posters may be turned in anytime between now and Dec. 1.

The idea for this contest began in 2009 when Wubben Hall was remodeled. Administrators wanted to put artwork on the plain walls; however, they did not have a budget for it.

We wanted to raise awareness of our field. We wanted to give students a feel that this was really their school. Thus, the poster contest came into being,” CSMS administrative assistant, Ronda McDonald said.

The department offers a small prize for the winner of the contest, but the posted advertisement does not specify what the prize is.

We do not have the ability to offer prize money through the CSMS budget.  The prize money comes from donations within the department, and varies year to year,” McDonald said.

The main incentive for students to participate, is that fact that their artwork will be displayed for their fellow students and CMU staff to enjoy.

For the past 7 years the department has had extremely positive feedback about contests, even people, some who do not even attend nor work at CMU.

“Students who have come back to CMU after graduating have often brought guests to CMU remarking, ‘I left my mark on CMU.’ We have parents, grandparents, other departments and students stop by the office saying it is a great idea. When we have tours of our department, we have very positive feedback from visitors,” McDonald said.

These posters and future posters will be in Wubben for years to come, allowing one to leave their legacy, in a creative way.

The judging will take place after Dec. 1, and the posters will be judged by staff within the CSMS department. There are many aspects that the prints will be judged upon, including the incorporation of the department itself.

This contest is open for all students, and staff encourages everyone to participate.

“You can walk down the hall and watch a student glancing at posters, checking them out. Anyone can participate in the poster contest no matter which major they are in. The poster contest helps participants learn more about Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics,” McDonald said.
