Why so cold?

As most of the country is bracing for severe winter storms, and California is dealing with fires, here in the Grand Valley we are just plain cold. East of the Rockies, Colorado is experiencing snow and road closures. There have even been a few major accidents due to the weather conditions on the other side of the mountain.

For us, the only places that have seen snow are the San Juans and up on the Grand Mesa. We had a very small chance of seeing some snow on Thanksgiving afternoon. Unfortunately, it was a mix of rain and hail.

What about us in the valley?

Just the other day, we woke up to 18 degree weather. With the wind, it felt more like 10 degrees. Although these conditions aren’t accompanied by snow, ironically, the fountain outside of the University Center (UC) has frozen over. It started with icicles down the sides of the rocks, and now the water below has frozen. It is been so cold outside it seems winter has begun. But has it really without snow?

Personally, I would have loved to see it snow over the Thanksgiving holiday. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Will we see snow for Christmas? I sure hope so. For me, it just isn’t a true Christmas unless it is a white Christmas!

“I agree that the snow needs to come and I am upset that it is this cold outside for no reason. I’d much rather have snow on the ground so that at least it gives the cold weather a purpose,” said Jazmyne Reining, senior.

Other students seem to be happy that we haven’t had snow yet. Even though it is cold, they are still able to do normal outside activities.

No matter whether or not students want the snow, it appears we won’t be seeing any for a while. As for the UC fountain, it must be a preview of what is to come.
