Why should you even attend college sporting events?

Everyone tells you to go to the games. But why? What makes collegiate athletics so special?

The school fight song, the loud dance break and thousands of your peers cheering for one cause. Is that the beauty of college sports or is it just one big social event? Why would anyone even attend college sporting events in the first place?

It doesn’t matter where you go to school, college athletics are a bigger deal then they are in high school. Collegiate athletes put in months of work even when their sport is not in season, they come in early from school breaks and sometimes don’t get those guaranteed days off. So shouldn’t we at least take a part of our Fridays and Saturdays and go out and watch a game.

Some people are not huge into professional sports but they like attending their colleges sporting events. College sports are more interesting because you have the opportunity to actually be involved. You’re watching your peers that you sit in psychology or algebra class with. One minute you’re talking about the upcoming test but then the same night you could be cheering them on as they win the conference championship.

Rivalries. They always make everything more fun. More intensity, ,more trash talk and more of everything else that makes college sports great. Just take the Rocky Mountain Showdown for example. Every year, Colorado State University and the University of Colorado-Boulder play their annual football game at Broncos Stadium at Mile High. Students drive from all over to watch this game, tailgate and have a good time. They tend to get the whole community or even the whole state to be divided in the rivalry together. It’s their very own football turf war.

College sports is where you start to become fans of the athletes and not just the teams. College sports is the biggest stepping stone for athletes who want to go professional so how cool would it be to say that you were classmates with someone who plays in the MLB, NFL or NBA? There are many talented athletes from lower division schools that can go pro and having the opportunity to watch them or maybe even know before they “go big”, makes you proud of not only them, but your school too.

Attending college sports is part of what you take away from this crazy experience that we get to partake in. Even if you do not like sports, there’s a different kind of importance for you go try new things and get out of your comfort zone, as cliché as it sounds, it could be the truth. Going to school sporting events is where you can create memories. Memories that you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life.

College sports gives you a chance to find a new passion, with new people, in a new place. So gather all your friends, dress in your school swag and get ready to root on your team.
