It was only October when the leaves started to change color and the temperature started to drop. Nobody told me it would get so cold.
Being from Southern California, my hometown is near the beach. The temperature never seems to change out there, it is always 73 degrees out, even in the winter. It rains twice a year which is why California is forever in a drought. Not to mention it only snows in maybe three different places: Big Bear, Mammoth and Lake Tahoe.
Essentially, there is no such thing as the freezing, unpredictable weather seen in Colorado in California.
So imagine my surprise and horror when it was only the first week of October and the temperature has already dropped to 30 degrees.
Thinking I had prepared enough “winter clothes” to survive the cold such as three heavy jackets and one long sleeve shirt to make it to Thanksgiving break, I was sorely wrong.
Two weeks ago I was wearing my Rainbow Sandals, the best pair of leather sandals you will ever own and made in my hometown. As soon as I ventured out to my morning class, I found that to be a major mistake. I could have lost a toe because it was so cold out! Ever since it’s been boots and socks.
In order to survive, I had to buy new clothes including three new long sleeves, one turtle neck, and a couple of new winter jackets. All at a discount thankfully, shout out to the Harmony Shelter Thrift Store.
Luckily enough the heater, fingers crossed, works in my dorm, although my roommate always wants to keep it at 55 degrees.
Not to mention the dread of waking up each morning and checking the weather to plan how warm to dress that day. One day it’s 60 degrees out in the morning, others it’s around 46.
So from what I’ve gathered, there’s no such thing as warm weather past August here and everyone will freeze to death by Thanksgiving, when I will retreat back home to the beach where it’s always 73 degrees out, even in the winter.
