The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team had another weekend of splitting a weekend on the road. CMU’s first game against Adams State University (ASU) ended with another notch victory belt while the second game against Fort Lewis College (FLC) resulted in a five-set defeat.

The game against ASU was dominated early by CMU, not allowing more than 30 combined points. The Grizzlies would go on to win the third set but the Mavericks managed to secure the victory after winning the fourth and final set 25-21.

Leading the charge in kills was Kasie Gilfert with 20 of the 62 total. MacKenzie Edwards followed up with 14 and Katie Scherr racked up nine. Ara Norwood did her part in assisting on 31 points while Samantha Ritter followed suit with 22 assists of her own.

Despite the second game being a loss for the Mavericks, the game was very tight. The girls went two sets up and two sets down until they lost the game by two points in the fifth and final set. The girls led in kills, assists and blocks over FLC, but the point production simply wasn’t there, ultimately giving CMU the loss regardless of their statistical authority.

Edwards took lead for kills during the Saturday game, netting 17. Gilfert was right behind her with 16 and Camille Smith took up the back with 13. For assists, Ritter took the helm of the ship and scored 31 assists on the day, exactly half of the total. Norwood took silver with 26 and Woods got a three-assist game. Woods once again had the biggest shovel, digging for 33 balls. Scherr backed her up with 17 and Ritter made an appearance with 12 on the day. The girls ran over FLC in the statistical field, only blocks and points beat the girls out, showing a hard fought game against the underdog that is FLC.

Moving forward, the next two games will be on the road and will see the Mavericks facing off against UCCS (7) and Colorado School of Mines (1), proving to be a challenging weekend. These will also be two of the last three games prior to the RMAC tournament on November 6. The girls will need to give it their all and continue to play consistently to prove that they deserve the third place spot on the RMAC leaderboards.
