The problem with school food

As many people at Colorado Mesa University are likely aware, food plays a central role in the life of a college student. For many that food comes from the cafeteria and other campus meal options. At CMU, these options are primarily provided by a food service company called Sodexo.

The food provided by Sodexo is what one would generally expect to find in a university setting- cheap and somewhat low-quality. This is especially true in the cafeteria.

It is understandable to an extent; after all, arranging food for an entire college-worth of people is no easy task. The amount that students would be required to pay for their meal plans would likely skyrocket in accordance with any changes in the quality. Nonetheless, it may become tiresome to eat what amounts to fast food for the entire duration of a school year.

The Flat Top Grill and Rowdy’s are both slightly better than the cafeteria in that they offer a wider variety of options, but they too suffer from similar limitations when it comes to overall quality.

Yet looking past the matter of quality, the issue that seems to be of the greatest annoyance is the cafeteria’s hours of operations during the weekends. The cafeteria is only open during the morning and evening and restricts itself to serving breakfast and dinner during those respective times. As such, students and faculty members wishing to eat lunch during the weekend are forced to find other options.

For those students who live on campus and may not have access to a kitchen, this is especially inconvenient. Fortunately, a student in such a situation is able to get lunch as a meal transfer from the Flat Top Grill, as long as they don’t mind waiting in line along with all the other people who had the same idea.

Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but that does not mean that it is all that people want to eat during the weekends.
