The Mavericks win their fourth conference game against the Griffins

The Mavericks assisted eight of their 17 goals in the game to take down the Griffins 17-3.

The Maverick’s 10-goal first half was too much for the Griffins to overcome as the Mavericks pulled off a 17-3 win in Salt Lake City, Utah.  

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis scored a game-high six points in the Maverick’s effort. She scored three goals on five shots and recorded three assists in the game.  

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) finished with a season-low in turnovers in the game as they recorded 12 turnovers in the game. The Mavericks controlled the groundball battle as they finished with a 21 to 13 advantage.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with 9:30 left in the first quarter. CMU’s offense remained at the same pace as they started the game off with as they added three more goals in the quarter.  

Westminster College (WC) got on the scoreboard first in the second quarter to score their only goal of the first half with 8:29 left in the second quarter.

Sophomore attacker Amber Wennerstrom came back with a goal of her own with 6:41 left in the first half on a man-up opportunity. CMU’s freshmen attackers Sara Hiller, Brooke Vafi and midfielder Payton Walker scored three more goals to go on a four-goal run to take a 10-1 lead going into the halftime break.  

Davis got the Maverick’s offense off to a fast start as she put the Mavericks up 11-1 with 13:04 remaining in the third quarter. Redshirt sophomore attackers Regan Wentz and Brianna Anderson kept CMU’s offense rolling with two more goals with 5:40 left in the third quarter.  

Maddie Kelleher got the Griffins on the board for their second goal of the game to bring the score to 2-13. Davis came back with her third and final goal of the game with 1:47 left in the third quarter to put the Mavericks up by 12 goals.  

Sophomore attacker Elizabeth Renken got CMU on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with 7:35 left in the game to put the Mavericks up 15-2. Grace Carico scored the final goal of the game for the Griffins with 4:54 left in the game. 

Redshirt sophomore Xcaret Salvador recorded her first goal of the season with 2:37 left in the game to put the Mavericks up 16-3. Freshman midfielder Molly Gilbert recorded the final goal of the game with 34 seconds left in the game off an assist from freshman defender Erica Rivera.

Anderson scored four points in the game as she recorded two goals and assists in the game. She recorded one caused turnover against the Griffins.  

Freshman goaltender Shannon Murphy played 30 minutes in the game and recorded eight saves in the game. Murphy allowed just one goal in that time period.  

The Maverick’s next game is Friday, April 8 at 5:00 p.m. against Colorado State University-Pueblo at Community Hospital Unity Field.
