The Mavericks traveled to Fort Lewis College (FLC) to show exactly what they’re made of. They kept up their effort and took the win 71-49.
Senior guard Kylyn Rigsby led the team as she scored 26 points and shot four for eight from three.
Fort Lewis started with the ball, but the Mavericks were quick to catch the rebound. With an attempt to shoot and score the ball was quick to end up on the other side of the court.
Rigsby saw the opportunity to steal the ball and took it. Allowing for Colorado Mesa University (CMU) to be the first to place on the board. CMU took control leading 21-8 in the first quarter as they shot 52.63 percent. FLC shot 23.08 percent leaving a gap for the Mavericks to take the lead on the scoreboard.
Senior guard Sophie Anderson and redshirt sophomore guard Natalie Bartle both helped the Mavericks from the free throw line both going three for four.
During the second quarter the Mavericks began to lose the high advantage. Bringing the score to 34-23. CMU was quick to realize in what areas they were lacking. They improved their offense and brought their shots in towards the key. Bringing their score up 60-36 in the third quarter.
The Mavericks defense maintained strength throughout the game. Showing the chemistry amongst the five starters. They were quick to fall back for help and assist one another.
CMU wasn’t going to allow for open shots. Keeping the Skyhawks at bay with them scoring 13 points between the third and fourth quarter. Freshman guard Sophie Haded provided the last points of the game for CMU with a smooth free throw.
The Mavericks next game is Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 5:30 P.M. against Westminster College in Grand Junction, Colo.
