The Mavericks take down the Mountain Lions to advance to the conference title game

The Mavericks advance to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship for the second consecutive year with their 18-11 win over the Mountain Lions.

The Mavericks advanced to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament Semifinals with their 18-11 win over the Mountain Lions.  

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis scored a team-high five goals on eight shots on goal in the game. She scored on two of her three free-position shots and won one draw control. 

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) won the ground ball battle in the game as they picked up 31 ground balls to the 21 for the Mountain Lions. The battle in the draw control circle was played evenly as CMU won 17 draw controls and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs won 16.

Davis got the Mavericks on the board first in the game with 13:29 remaining in the first quarter on a free-position shot. Hannah Mill came back with an answer for UCCS as she scored one of her five goals on the day.  

Audrey Napp put the Mountain Lions up 2-1 with 5:02 left in the first quarter as she fired a shot into the top right corner. Natalie Church continued the three-goal run for the Mountain Lions into the second quarter with a goal with 12:45 left in the first half.  

Redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz opened the second quarter up for the Mavericks as she scored with 11:49 left in the second quarter. Wentz’s goal queued a four-goal run for CMU with redshirt sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman, Davis and Wentz all registering a goal to put the Mavericks up 5-3.  

The Mountain Lions answered with two goals to tie the game at five with 5:14 left in the second quarter. Freshman attacker Caroline Ohngemach put the Mavericks up 6-5 off an assist from Jakeman to put CMU up 6-5 with 32 seconds left in the first half.  

Ohngemach got the Maverick’s offense going in the second half as she put the Mavericks up by two goals with 13:09 left in the third quarter. Jakeman put the Mavericks up 8-5 off an assist from redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans.  

CMU poured on four more goals to take a 12-5 lead with 5:49 left in the third quarter. The Mountain Lions came back with two goals of their own to bring them within five goals.

Davis scored her fourth goal of the game with 3:40 left in the third quarter off an assist from freshman midfielder Ali Bryant to put the Mavericks up 13-7. UCCS didn’t back down as they scored two more goals in the third quarter to bring them within four goals.  

Both teams traded a goal to open the fourth quarter as the Mavericks held on to their four-goal lead. Ohngemach and Davis put the Mavericks up 16-10 with 2:48 left in the fourth quarter with two unanswered goals.  

Julia Patrick scored the final goal of the game for UCCS with 2:20 left in the game on a free-position opportunity. Ohngemach and Evans recorded the final two goals of the game in the final 15 seconds of the fourth quarter to give them the seven-goal win.  

Jakeman recorded five points in the game for the Mavericks and caused one turnover in the game. She scored three goals and dished out two assists in the Maverick’s win.  

Wentz, Evans, and Ohngemach each scored four points in the Maverick’s dominant offensive performance.  

The Maverick’s next game is Sunday, March 8 at noon against Regis University in the RMAC Tournament Championship.
