The Mavericks beat the Mountain Lions 16-13 as they swept the season series.

Redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans led the Mavericks in scoring with six points and she caused two turnovers in the game. She scored two goals and dished out four assists in the game. Evans moved into fifth on the Maverick’s all-time single-season assists records as she has 29 assists this season.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) won 20 of the 33 draw controls in the game as they controlled the circle which led to quality possessions. The Mavericks also won the ground ball battle 21 to 19 over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS).

Redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz scored the first goal of the game with 8:18 left in the first quarter. The Mountain Lions and Audrey Napp answered less than a minute later to tie the game at one.

Wentz came back with her second goal of the first quarter to put the Mavericks up 2-1 with 4:52 left in the first quarter. UCCS answered yet again to tie the game at two with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Mountain Lions took a 3-2 lead just 50 seconds into the second quarter as Julia Patrick scored off a free-position shot. Freshman midfielder Ali Bryant tied the game back up at three as she dodged to her left hand through the defense to finish on the off-stick hip side of Madison McGriff.

The Mavericks added two more goals to take a 5-3 lead with 7:31 left in the second quarter. Hannah Mill stopped the run from the Mavericks with a goal of their own to bring UCCS within one goal with 6:59 remaining in the first half.

CMU came back with another three-goal run to take an 8-4 lead with 2:35 left in the second quarter. Julia Patrick scored on a man-up opportunity and a free-position shot to bring the Mountain Lions within three goals. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis scored the final goal of the second half on a free position shot to put CMU up 9-5 with 1:21 remaining in the second half.

Angela Naughton got the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard first in the second half to keep UCCS within three goals. Evans put the Mavericks up 10-6 as she beat every Mountain Lions defender to the front of the net to score off a free-position shot.

Both teams ended the third quarter with a two-goal run as CMU kept their four-goal lead going into the final quarter of the game.

Church got UCCS on the board first in the fourth quarter with 14:20 left in the game to bring the Mountain Lions within three goals. She scored another goal three minutes later in the quarter to bring UCCS within two goals.

The Mavericks answered with a four-goal run of their own to take a 16-10 lead that served as the dagger in the game. UCCS’s three-goal run in the final six and a half minutes of the game was too little, too late as the Mavericks held on to pull off the three-goal win over UCCS.

Redshirt junior midfielder Ashton Whittle scored a career-high 5 goals in the game. She also won seven draw controls in the Maverick’s performance

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis moved into 10 on the CMU all-time points list for a single season in the game. She scored four goals against the Mountain Lions which gave her 54 total points this season, and Davis is chasing Marissa Leonardi who scored 56 points in 2019.

The Maverick’s next game is Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. against the No. 3 team in the nation Regis University in the final game of the regular season.
