The Mavericks headed to Alamosa, Colo. to compete with Regis University (RU) and Adams State University (ASU) in a pod series.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) found that being consistent was the key to sweeping the pod series and they were able to do just that.

In the first game of the weekend, the Mavericks met up with the Rangers where CMU took the 8-1 victory. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Kannon Handy picked up his fifth win of the season as he only allowed one run and had five strikeouts.

Senior and sophomore infielders Jordan Stubbings and Harrison Rodgers had two RBIs each. Stubbings went 3-4 against RU including a double and a home run. Stubbings scored on a balk as well in the sixth.

On Saturday, the Mavericks had a doubleheader where game one was against the Grizzlies and game two was against the Rangers. The Mavericks scored a total of 28 runs on Saturday between the two games.

In a 13-0 victory, CMU was able to get a shutout win against ASU.

Sophomore right handed pitcher Cooper Vasquez made his first start of the season and proved that he could come out of the bullpen or get the start on the mound. Vasquez went seven innings and only gave up two hits while striking out nine.

He got a lot of help from his offense as they put up runs every inning he was in besides the second inning.

Still up 1-0 going into the third, CMU was looking to get some more runs on the board and with help from junior designated hitter Haydn McGeary they were able to do just that. McGeary was able to get a hold of one to pull into left field for a three run home run. Rodgers and senior infielder Caleb Farmer scored on the play.

That was not McGeary’s only home run of the game, he was able to go opposite field in the sixth inning to add to CMUs lead.

Rodgers and senior infielder Chase Hamilton hit solo home runs in the fourth.

The Mavericks had a four run fifth inning as a fielder choice play allowed junior outfielder Conrad Villafuerte to score. Junior outfielder Julian Boyd was able to capitalize on a passed ball and get home in time.

CMU played another high scoring game against the Rangers as they had a big seven run second inning.

The Mavericks scored early as McGeary hit his third home run of the weekend in the first inning. McGeary now is the only Maverick baseball player to reach 50 plus home runs in his Maverick career.

CMU’s big scoring run in the seventh started with Farmer scoring on an error by RU’s picther Ethan Sloan. Hamilton was able to advance to second on the play allowing him to get into scoring position for sophomore outfielder Robert Sharrar.

Sharrar was able to make contact and triple to left center on a 0-2 count. Sharrar was able to score on a groundout from Rodgers giving CMU a 4-0 lead.

The Mavericks capitalized on multiple errors in the second giving them three of their runs.

The Mavericks were up by eight in the sixth as the Rangers were able to close the gap in the back half of the game.

Matt Marlow helped out his team as he went 3-5 with three RBIs. Levi Padilla also helped out in the Rangers attempt at a comeback as he went 2-2 with three RBIs of his own.

The Mavericks were able to pull out the 15-12 victory to secure the pod series win. They conquered the sweep as they played one last game in Alamosa against the host team Sunday afternoon.

This time it was a comeback victory for the Mavericks as they were down 0-4 after the second inning. A three run ninth inning gave CMU the edge they needed to pull out the win.

In the ninth inning the Mavericks had back to back home runs from Farmer and Bramwell. Villafuerte then came in to pinch hit and had the game winning hit, scoring Carr.

Right handed pitcher Gage Edwards came in for the Mavericks late in the game and picked up the victory as he went four innings and had five strikeouts.

The Mavericks will be back on the road April 8 as they take on the Metro State University- Denver Roadrunners in an important series for both teams. First pitch from Denver, Colo will be at 6 p.m.
