The Mavericks split road series

The Mavericks headed back on the road for one last time in the regular season and split the games with a loss against Western Colorado University (WCU) and a win against Fort Lewis College (FLC). 

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Women’s Basketball team struggled on offense against WCU as they shot 30% from the field and 30.4% from the arc. 

Graduate student forward Kelsey Siemons led the Mavericks with 13 points while graduate student guard Daniella Turner had 11. The Mavericks had 18 points from inside the paint as they only went 7-23 from the arc. 

For the Mountaineers, Katie Dalton led her team with 12 points while Emmery Wagstaff had 11. 

WCU capitalized on being to drive into the paint and had 22 points from the paint. Their bench also was able to come in and get the job done as 21 points were scored off the bench. 

The Mavericks lost the game against the Mountaineers 50-69.

CMU then traveled to Durango, Colo. on Feb. 26 and competed in the final game of the season against FLC. They were able to pull out the win on the road 77-54. 

Despite having struggled shooting the ball against WCU they were able to shoot well against FLC. 

Graduate student guard Mariah Martin was able to lead the Mavericks with 23 points while going 6-6 from the free throw line. She was able to go 8-19 from the field as well. Redshirt junior guard Monica Brooks went 9-10 from the field within the 19 points she was able to put on the board. 

Martin also led CMU with eight assists. She also was able to help her team defensively as she had six rebounds. 

Graduate student guard Sophie Anderson continued to be strong defensively as she was able to collect eight rebounds. Three of her rebounds came on the offensive side of the game. 

In the 15 minutes that freshman forward Emily Cavey played, she collected seven rebounds and four points. 

As a whole the Mavericks shot better then they did on Friday night as they shot 46.7% from the field. They still were not as successful as they could have been from the three point line and shot 22.7%. 

The Mavericks finished the regular season with an overall record of 22-5 and a conference record of 17-5. 

CMU will compete in the RMAC tournament that begins Mar.1. They will host their quarterfinal game against UCCS at 5:30 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
