The Mavericks shine in the pool

The Mavericks have continued to find their momentum at the Division Two Swim and Dive National competition. 

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) set multiple records on Thursday as both the men’s and women’s 400-medley relay teams set school records. 

Lauren White got the women’s relay team off to a great start  with a 100 backstroke time of 54.64. She broke her own record that she set a few weeks ago in the RMAC Championships. Lily Borgenheimer then got into the pool and swam the breaststroke followed up by Davy Brown and Logan Anderson. The Mavericks women’s relay team finished with a time of 3:43. 

The men’s team consisted of Ben Sampson, Mahmoud Elgayar, Dejan Urbanek and Lane Austin who, like the women, took ninth in the relay. The men’s relay finished with a 3:12 time which matched their time from November. The same relay also finished sixth in the men’s 200 medley relay. 

Kelsea Wright was able to get a fifth place finish in the 200 free. 

On the diving side of the competition, Jolynn Harris finished eighth in the three meter finals with an 11-dive score of 405.95. 

In the third day of competition, Isaiah Cheeks was able to continue to find success on the three meter diving board as he led CMU to another victory in the event. Cheeks finished with a score of 537.75. Noah Luna was also able to make the top three as he ended up getting third in the event. Tanner Belliston finished eighth. 

Back in the pool, Katerina Matoskova placed eighth in the 500-yard freestyle event. Her final time was 4:56. Amelia Kinnard competed in the consolation final and got 15.

White continued to show her dominance in the backstroke event as she finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. She finished behind Cassie Wright and Celina Marquez from Nova Southeastern and Laura Pareja. White swam the event in a time of 53.90 which was faster then her time in the 400-medley relay the night before. 

Sampson competed on the men’s side of the 100-yard backstroke and finished just short of the podium as he got fourth with a time of 46.38. Finn Howard from Queens won the event with a time of 45.82. 

Borgenheimer competed in the 100-yard backstroke and finished eighth. 

The Mavericks relay teams continued to have a strong showing as the women’s 800-yard freestyle team finished third. Wright, White, Borgenheimer and Matoskova competed for CMU. They finished behind Queens and West Chester. 

The men;s team also placed third with a team that consisted of Urbanek, Sampson, Kuba Kiszczak and Matheus Laperriere. They finished behind Queens and McKendree. 

After three days of competition, the women’s team has 168 points and is in fifth place while the men’s team sits in fifth with 200 points.

The Mavericks have one more day of competition before their season is complete. The final day of prelims begins Mar.12 at 8 a.m.
