The Mavericks matched the program’s best start with a 6-0 record after picking up a 15-7 over Davenport University (DU).

Freshman faceoff man Cole Emmanuel controlled the faceoff x winning 17 of 22 while registering two points. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) dominance at the faceoff x allowed them to push the tempo and get 62 shots off.

Emmanuel scored eight seconds into the second quarter as he won the faceoff and ran down the field with a full head of steam to put one past DU goalie Daniel Milano.

Milano finished the game with 24 saves through 60 minutes.

“He is a good fundamental goalie, and he made a lot of really nice saves. I don’t think we shot particularly great,” CMU Head Coach Vince Smith said. “I think it was one of those games that they look at a team’s record and think their 0-3 so here’s a chance for me to go and get my points.”

Freshman attackman/midfielder AJ Switzer led the Mavericks in scoring with three goals and one assist. Switzer was assisted by graduate transfer attackman James Booth on a 30-second man-up opportunity scoring the first goal of the game. Switzer started hot with both man-up goals and an assist to freshman attackman Jed Brummett in the first quarter.

Booth finished the game with three assists as he has registered two or more assists in every game this season.

The Panthers kept the game close in the first half as they were down by three and keeping up with the Mavericks offensively.

The Mavericks separated from the Panthers in the third quarter outscoring DU 5-2. Freshman midfielder/attackman Holden Evans registered his third and fourth goals of the season to open the third quarter.

CMU’s dominance at the faceoff x continued in the second half winning 10 of 13 allowing them to maintain their lead to stay undefeated.

The Mavericks defense played well as they forced 10 turnovers and keeping the Panthers at six or fewer shots on goal in each quarter. Freshman midfielder Drew Eickleman caused one turnover and picked up three ground balls in the game. Eickleman scored the second goal of his career in a transition opportunity coming off a save from senior goaltender Christian Cherry.

Cherry saw 23 shots and made 11 saves as he played all 60 minutes of the contest.

The Maverick’s next game is Sunday, Mar. 8 at noon against Rockhurst in their first matchup against a nationally ranked opponent.
