The Mavericks scored 20 runs while Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) touched home plate nine times total in the doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The sun was out at Suplizio Field on Friday and so was the Maverick offense. Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) offense has outscored NNU 23 to 10 in the first three games of the series.

Sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary continued the scoring for the Mavericks in the first game with a solo home run that followed a two-run homer from senior outfielder Tyler Parker. McGeary singled to score Spencer Bramwell in the third inning and a double to score Parker the following inning.

McGeary hit two home runs in the second game of the doubleheader. His first home run started the scoring off in the game with his second coming in the fourth inning bringing Parker in on both.

CMU had multiple players hit more than one home run. Parker hit a pair of two-run home runs in each game. Junior transfer first baseman Nolan Walker hit his first two home runs in a Maverick uniform in the first game.

When it looked like the Mavericks had sealed the first game the Nighthawks disagreed, as they tied the game up at eight runs each in the seventh.

With McGeary on base, junior shortstop Chase Hamilton homered to left field to secure the Mavericks win.

The second game had a delay with the Mavericks coaching staff calling an illegal bat into question at the top of the second inning. NNU hit what looked like a double to the center-field wall but then would be called an out.

Reynolds wasn’t bothered by the delay as he put together another strong performance out on the mound. Reynolds threw nine strikeouts and allowed three hits in his second win of the season.

“The delay of the game was a big moment in the game. There are two ways the game could have gone after the delay and I was going to make sure it wasn’t going to affect us in a negative way,” senior pitcher Trevin Reynolds said.

Reynolds pitched five innings before Austin Lorenz and Cade Nicol come in for the final two innings.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Jared Ure had another impressive start in the first game on Friday before the Maverick bullpen came in. Ure struck out five batters through five and one-third innings.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Gage Edwards allowed three runs in one and one third then passed the ball over to Kannon Handy the freshman left-handed pitcher out of Utah. Handy got the first win of his collegiate career.

Junior right-handed pitcher Frankie Fitzgerald came into the game and registered his first save of the season.

The Mavericks wrap up their series with the Nighthawks Feb. 22 at noon.
