The Mavericks lose their first game of the season

The Mavericks assisted six of their eight goals in the first loss of their season against the sixth-ranked Mocs.

The Mavericks lost their first game of the season to open their spring break trip 8-20 to the nationally ranked Mocs.  

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) controlled the draw control circle in the game as they won 18 of the 29 draws. The Mavericks had four different players record four draw controls.  

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis scored four goals on six shots in the game. Davis was one of the four players that recorded four draw controls for CMU in the game.  

Florida Southern College (FSC) scored two goals in the opening two minutes of the first quarter to jump out to an early lead. Davis came back with two goals of her own to tie the game up at two with 6:53 left in the first quarter.

The Mocs came back with a four-goal run to take a 6-2 lead four minutes later, and Davis answered with her third goal of the game to end the run. FSC’s offense didn’t slow down as they put four more shots into the back of the net to take a 10-3 lead into the second quarter.  

FSC opened the second quarter with two goals to give them a nine-goal lead with 10:21 left in the first half.  

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman ended the Mocs run with her lone goal of the game a minute later on a man-up opportunity.  

The Mocs answered with three more goals in the second quarter to take a 15-4 lead into the halftime break.  

Freshman midfielder Payton Walker got CMU off to a fast start in the third quarter as she scored just 50 seconds into the quarter. Both teams then traded goals back-and-forth in the third quarter as the Mavericks outscored the Mocs in the quarter three to two.  

FSC’s offense got back on track in the fourth quarter as they scored two unanswered goals to take a 19-7 lead with 9:03 left in the game. Davis scored her fourth and final goal of the game with 7:23 left in the game to record her 13 goal of the season. 

Marlee Moon Gaddy answered with the Moc’s final goal of the game with 1:51 left in the game to go up 20-8.  

Redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz and Jakeman both recorded two points in the game for CMU. Wentz dished out two assists in the game and picked up five ground balls. Jakeman recorded one goal and one assist in the game. 

The Maverick’s next game is Tuesday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m. against Rollins College. It will be the second game of the five-game stretch where the Mavericks match up against nationally-ranked opponents.
