The Mavericks lose big in St. Paul

The Mavericks struggled to contain the Golden Bears offense as they had 42 shots and assisted nine of their 15 goals in the game.

The Mavericks fall to 0-2 this season losing 4-15 as they struggled to get things going against the Golden Bears. 

Concordia University-St. Paul (CUSP) hustled all over the field as they picked up 16 more groundballs than the Mavericks. 

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) scored three of their four goals in the final 12 minutes of the game with one coming off a free-position goal.  

Junior goaltender Lula Mitchell made 12 saves on 27 shots faced.

The Golden Bears got on the board first in the game with 28:36 on the clock, but the Mavericks were able to hold them scoreless for the next ten minutes. CMU didn’t allow any big runs, but CUSP’s repeated two-goal runs gave them a 9-1 halftime lead.  

The Golden Bears controlled 9-11 draws in the half allowing them to play make-it take-it lacrosse. 

CMU had 30 turnovers in the game with the Golden Bears causing 19 of the turnovers. The Mavericks struggled to clear the ball as they went 18-26 

CUSP had three players with five or more points in the contest with Maddie Hentges leading her team with six goals.  

Junior attacker Kenzie Blackwell led the Mavericks in goals with two with one coming on a man-up opportunity with the goalie Claire Hagen out of the cage because she committed the foul. Sophomore attacker Maeve Hungerford had one goal and one assist in the game as she was one of three Mavericks to register a point.  

The Mavericks next game will be Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 7 p.m. for their home opener against Northern Michigan University.
