The Mavericks finish day two in first place

The Mavericks dominate in the pool on day two of the A3 Performance Invite as both the men's and women's teams finished the day in first place and set nine records on the day.

Both Maverick Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams finished day two of the A3 Performance Invitational in first place.  

The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Women’s Swim and Dive Team finished the day with 517 points with Northern Arizona University (NAU) closely trailing with 376 points.  

Nine different swimmers from three different schools finished with a faster time than the 2B Division 2 B Standard time of 5:09.82 in the women’s 500-yard freestyle. Eight of those nine qualified in the prelims races which included senior Kelsea Wright finished the prelims with a time of 5:09.22.  

Wright then finished the 500-yard freestyle heat A final in third place with a time of 5:00.78. Sophomore Katerina Matoskova came in fourth in the race with a time of 5:01.97.  

Senior Lily Borgenheimer then followed it up by breaking the meet record in the women’s 200-yard individual medley final and had a time that was better than the 2B D2 B Standard. Borgenheimer finished with a time of 2:03.14 which broke the meet record of 2:04.18.  

Junior Davy Brown also had a better time than the 2B D2 B Standard of 2:06.56 as she finished the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.71.

The CMU Dive Team saw senior Jolynn Harris set another meet record of 466.5 points as Harris scored 475.55 points in the women’s one-meter diving final to earn first. Senior Ali Lange and freshman Kyra Apodaca came in second and third for the Mavericks.  

The final event for the women’s team was the 200-yard freestyle relay, and the Mavericks finished just four-hundredths of a second under the meet record. The relay team featured redshirt senior Julie Day, senior Logan Anderson, junior Ruby Bottai and sophomore Izzy Powers and they finished the race with a time of 1:34.48 which was just under the meet record of 1:34.44.  

The CMU Men’s Swim and Dive Team ended the day with 624 points and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was in second with 393 points. The CMU Men’s Club Swim and Dive are in third with 99 points.  

Freshman Dejan Urbanek opened the night for the men’s team by shattering the meet record in the 500-yard freestyle of 4:31.88. Urbanek finished the race first with a time of 4:28.65 and had a time faster than the 2B D2 B Standard of 4:39.84. Sophomore Gavin Anderson also beat the 2B D2 B Standard with a time of 4:37.62 which earned him a second-place finish.  

The men’s 200-yard individual medley saw the CMU men finish in first, second and third place. Junior Matheus Laperriere, freshman Zach Hartman and junior Matt Barrett were those three for CMU.  

Laperriere came in first with a time of 1:44.59 in the 200-yard individual medley final. His time was just over a second away from the meet record that was set by sophomore Ben Sampson in the prelims the same morning.  

Sampson set the meet record in the 200-yard individual medley as he finished with a time of 1:48.85.  

Day two of the A3 Performance Invite ended with the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay. The relay team was made up of Sampson, senior Lane Austin, sophomore Mado Elkady and junior Felipe D’Orsi. They finished with a time of 1:20.05 which not only was under the 2B D2 B Standard but also broke the meet and pool record.  

The pool record in the 200-yard freestyle relay was 1:20.14 and was set in 2019 before the Mavericks broke it.  

Day three of the A3 Performance Invite is Nov. 19 with the prelims starting at 10 a.m.
