The Mavericks fall to top competition in the nation

The Mavericks fall to 1-3 on the season with their 7-18 loss to the Greyhounds.

The Mavericks lose their second straight game to teams that are ranked in the top five nationally as they fell 7-18 against the Greyhounds. 

Three players for the University of Indianapolis (UI) finished the game with five points. The trio combined to score 11 goals and four assists in the Greyhound’s win.  

Senior goalie Lula Mitchell set a new career-high in saves with 19 against the Greyhounds. Mitchell’s previous career high was 16 saves and she set that mark on Sunday, March 21 against Lindenwood University. 

The Mavericks got on the board first after a settled position that ended with sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman scoring her lone goal of the game.  

UI gained momentum s they scored four unanswered goals with Lauryn Hardoy and Abigail Lagos scoring two goals each. Freshman attacker Elizabeth Renken scored her second goal of the season as she brought the Mavericks within two points.

The Greyhounds answered scoring four straight goals to push their lead up to 8-2 with less than 10 minutes left in the opening half. Both teams traded goals late in the first half as Colorado Mesa University (CMU) finished the half on a three to two run to end the half down 5-10.  

Quinn Malcolm got UI on the board first in the second half to push their lead up to six points. Sophomore attacker Briana Anderson assisted sophomore midfielder Regan Wentz to score the Mavericks first goal of the second half.  

Anderson recorded her second point of the game as she scored off free position shot to score CMU’s seventh and final goal of the game.  

The Greyhounds scored seven goals to end the game with their final goal coming with 21 seconds left in the game.  

UI finished the game with 30 ground balls as they were able to control the 50/50 possessions as the Mavericks finished with 12 ground balls. The Greyhounds were also able to win the majority of the draw controls as they ended the game with 18 draw controls.  

The Mavericks had three different players score two points in the game. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Wick, Whittle and Anderson each finished the game with one goal and one assist.

CMU’s next game is Saturday, March 27 at 1 p.m. against Westminster College in their home opener at Maverick Field.
