The Mavericks fall to 12-7 after going 0-2 in Utah

The Griffins went 12-26 from behind the arc propelling them to the 15-point win.

The Mavericks were outworked by Westminster College (WC) in the last game of what ended up in a disappointing road trip for the Mavericks.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) allowed 13 second-chance points on eight offensive rebounds, but the Griffins also shot 50 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from behind the arc. WC also outrebounded the Mavericks by nine that helped the Griffins extend the lead and win by 15 points. WC’s Jake Connor led all scorers with 20 points as he 8-13 from the field with four three-pointers made.  

In the first half, the teams were evenly matched, as neither could gain the early edge over the other, with the Mavericks holding onto a three-point lead through the first ten minutes of the game. The Griffins were outrebounding CMU by six in the first half, and their advantage on the glass provided them with a three-point lead going into the halftime break.

The Mavericks couldn’t keep up with the Griffins in the second half, as WC scored 41 points while shooting 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. CMU kept the game close for 10 minutes of the second half, but they had nine turnovers in the half, as the Griffins opened the game up and didn’t relinquish the lead.  

Ethan Richardson led the Mavericks in scoring with 13 points, followed by Michael Skinner with 11 and Tommy Nuno with 10 points, and the three combined for eight rebounds and two assists as well.  

CMU’s next game will be Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. against Regis University as they start another road trip.
