The Mavericks fall in their final home game

The Mavericks lose 4-19 to the No. 10 nationally ranked Ranger in their final home game of the season.

The Mavericks lose 4-19 in their final home game of the season against the No. 10 nationally ranked Regis University (RU) Rangers.  

The Mavericks record falls to 7-4, but all four of the Mavericks losses have come to teams ranked in the top ten nationally.  

Kyleigh Peoples scored a game-high six points as she finished the game with three goals and three assists. Six different Mavericks scored one point in the game against the Rangers.  

RU scored the first two goals of the game within the opening two minutes of the gameBailey Truex increased the Rangers lead to three as she scored with 25:28 left in the first half. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) tried to answer with a goal of their own, but both of their shots missed wide of the goal on good opportunities.

The Rangers offense kept their foot on the gas pedal as they increased their lead to 5-0 with 18:54 left in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Regan Wentz got the Mavericks on the board as she rounded the crease, avoided the body check, got around her defender and finished over Elle Crawford’s head.  

RU answered with six consecutive goals to increase their lead to 11-1 with 5:58 left in the first half. Sophomore attacker Melanie Evans scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from freshman midfielder with just 10 seconds left in the first half.  

The Mavericks were able to keep the Rangers off the board in the opening five minutes of the second half before Tia Krats scored the first goal of the second half. The Rangers took the momentum that Krat’s goal gave them and proceeded to score six more unanswered goals to go up 18-2.  

Junior attacker Ashton Whittle took the ball coast-to-coast and went through three Rangers defenders to finish over Crawford’s head to give CMU their third goal of the game. Sophomore attack Madison Navarro scored the Mavericks fourth goal of the game on a free-position opportunity with 2:10 left in the game.  

The Rangers weren’t done as Monica Looney scored with 47 seconds left in the game to increase the Ranger’s lead to 15.  

Jessica Berg finished the game with five goals for the Rangers as she shot 83.3% in the game.  

RU ended the game with one more groundball than CMU as the groundball battle finished 20-19 in the Ranger’s favor. 

Senior attacker Kenzie Blackwell returned from injury against the Rangers as she played for the first time since CMU’s opening game.

CMU’s next game is Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. against Westminster College in their final game of the regular season.
